Campfire Poems III

I’ve set up camp
I’ve made my fire
I’ve grinned a smug grin
hiding my sheepishness

with each wave of forest damp
each whiff of campfire eagerness
I am reminded
we humans are awkward creatures
unable to exist on this living orb
without nervous reflection
impulsive controlling, planning
swamping, escaping
this place of being

I will settle myself
by the comfort of fire
whose wild understanding
gives this species
its collective heartbeat
in simple explanation
why we can only dwell next to
the illusion of Earth minus us
press our noses in wonder
at nature’s simplicity

then throw another log on the fire

***sigh*** We have to “get away from it all,” in order to find ourselves. Now, if we could only do without so much “all,” in the first place! This was a wonderful poetic dialog.
